December 29th, 2009

The Merchants of Seaside are “putting on the Ritz” for Countdown Seaside!

A New Year’s Eve Celebration with the region’s most exciting, family-friendly party featuring live entertainment, kid’s art projects and an amazing fireworks display over the Gulf of Mexico.

Festivities for this fabulous family event begin at 7 p.m. and last until 12 a.m. New Year’s Day. Make a resolution to add some fun in your life and start 2010 off with a bang!

Spectators will be charmed by a mesmerizing mix of music ranging from fresh Memphis Blues to Big Easy Zydeco. The celebration kicks off in the Amphitheater with a performance by Delta Highway at 7 p.m., followed by the Grammy Award Winning Zydeco sounds of Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience at 9:30 p.m. Finally, let’s all welcome 2010 with a spectacular fireworks display over the gulf at the stroke of midnight.

Seaside has something for everyone on this special occasion, including the little ones. Abrakadoodle will be on hand from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. offering unique art projects for our New Year’s Celebration. These projects will be free and include making celebratory party hats, noisemakers and even a fireworks picture that includes painting with Koosh balls! Abrakadoodle will also have face painters on hand to get both the young and young-at-heart in the festive spirit.

In a generation that has forgotten its musical roots, Delta Highway breathes youth and energy back into the blues. With strong guitar sounds reminiscent of Muddy Waters and R.L. Burnside, combined with a progressive harmonica sound, this Memphis band has developed a style that is all their own and sure to please new and veteran blues fans alike.

Frontman Brandon Santini was inspired while in his mid-teens by the sounds of John Popper’s harmonica, but quickly learned about the real blues from heavyweights such as Paul Butterfield, Little Walter, Kim Wilson, and Junior Wells. Santini brings youth to the instrument and presents his thick, distorted tones with his fiery quick runs that seems to grab the attention of younger music fans as well as satisfying traditionalists. Delta Highway was recently nominated for Best New Debut Artist at the 2009 Blues Music Awards.

For more than 2 decades Grammy Award Winning artist Terrance Simien, 8th generation Louisiana Creole has been shattering the myths about indigenous Creole Zydeco music. Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience have become one of the most respected and internationally recognized touring and recording artists in roots music today. Simien has performed over 5000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 40 countries and reached at least a million people during his eventful 25-year career.

During the past 25 years Simien has shared studio and stage with Robert Palmer, Stevie Wonder, Los Lobos, the Meters, Paul Simon and Dave Matthews Band to name a few. He has been featured in dozens of films, TV movies and commercials. Rolling Stone, Billboard, other notable music industry publications and major daily newspapers have praised his recordings.

He has received countless awards, grants and recognition for his artistry as well as his contributions to help raise the professional standards by mentoring his fellow and emerging artists about the music industry. In 2008, Simien became a spokesperson for the State of Louisiana Office of Tourism and in December of 2009, Disney will release a new Pixar animated film, “The Princess & The Frog”, set in New Orleans, featuring the music of Simien. Terrance is also currently working on a non-fiction book for students about Creole culture and Zydeco music.

“This year Seaside is proud to offer a New Year’s Eve celebration unlike anything ever seen along 30A. We’ll take audiences on an exciting musical journey beginning with a unique blend of contemporary blues then closing with a crowd-pleasing mix of Zydeco just before the big fireworks show,” said Pam Avera, Seaside’s General Manager. “We are thrilled to continue our tradition of offering incredible family-friendly events that create memories for our homeowners and guests.”

Frommer’s Declares Seaside a Top World Destination

December 29th, 2009

Frommer’s, the hugely popular source of online and print travel guides, has ranked Seaside and the Beaches of South Walton as one of its Top 12 Destinations in the world.

“There’s really something for everyone,” Leslie Abravenal, author of Frommer’s Florida, wrote. “Seaside’s planned community is so ‘perfect’ it was the setting for The Truman Show, yet you’ll also find old-school Florida towns with funky shops, tiny hotels, pristine beaches and the perfect cottage to rent.”

“We are honored to have Seaside recognized as a top world destination,” Daryl Davis, Seaside co-founder said.

“The timing of this recognition is impeccable as we prepare to open a new international airport in Panama City Beach in May 2010,” added Sonny Mares, executive director of the Beaches of South Walton Tourist Development Council. “The new airport—and more competitive air service—will fulfill a critical need, providing travelers direct access to Northwest Florida and to our beautiful beaches, collection of beach communities and breadth of recreational activities.”

Rare Coin Jewelry a Meaningful Buy

Rare Coin Jewelry a Meaningful Buy
By Susan Vallee

La Vie Est Belle carries some of the most unique jewelry in the world. Authentic shipwreck and ancient treasure coins, salvaged from the depths of the sea and rescued from obscurity, are transformed lovingly into necklaces and bracelets that can never be duplicated. Each piece is as rare as the person who wears it.

Unassuming settings focus the eye on the coin themselves. Rare and exquisite pearls offset many of the coins, adding a spot of luminosity and color to a burnished gold coin or ancient sterling setting.
“I don’t think anyone, any ancient coin dealers, are doing what we’re doing with the coins. No one pairs them with pearls like this,” Danny Edwards, coin specialist at La Vie Est Belle, said.

The organic feel of ancient and rare coins strung on hand-rolled leather with bulbous hand-drilled pearls from the South Seas, Tahiti and Australia came about quite naturally, as most things seem to do in La Vie Est Belle owner’s Wendy Mignot’s life.

Mignot lived and worked with jewelry for years in the Caribbean, where her path crossed Edwards. Years later, the two found themselves once again living in another coastal town – Seaside. Mignot was garnering great success with her ubiquitous pearl jewelry and was eager to offer her clientele another distinctive form of self-expression.

Edwards owned a rare coin business in St. Thomas and jumped at the chance to feed his true passion – sharing the stories and history of the coins with anyone who will listen.
A recent visit found him lighting up at the mere mention of ancient Egyptian coins that were en route to the store.
“They are incredible,” he said. “The best I’ve seen.”

And sure enough, within a matter of days of the coins being set, not a single Egyptian coin from that find was left at La Vie Est Belle.
To help his clients feel more confident about the authenticity of the coins, he is meticulous about paperwork.
“Each coin is certified and is accompanied by information about the ship, when it was discovered, its history, you always want to be able to trace the coin,” he explained. “Theses provide a way to trace the coins, a sure sign they are authentic.”

Each piece of coin jewelry is identified in the case by shipwreck and year (or as an ancient coin). Photos on the wall show salvage trips in progress, and the jewelry are deftly displayed on, or surrounded by, pottery and artifacts Edwards found while out conducting his dives.
The first coin he ever found while diving is on display, but he deftly changes the subject from his personal dive finds and instead focuses on the beauty of the coins. Ancient Roman coins are popular, he said. And it is somehow soothing to adorn yourself with an item traded for goods in 449 BC, or with a coin directly referenced in the Holy Bible.

Prices vary depending on the type of pearls and coin, but both Mignot and Edwards stress that there is something for every shopper at La Vie Est Belle.
This summer treat yourself, or a loved one, to a piece of beautiful history. Let its story weave seamlessly with your own.
